AHA Webinar: Strategies for Addressing Violence in Post-Acute Care Environments
Monday, November 07, 2016 10:41 AM
On Wednesday, November 9, AHA will host a webinar on Strategies for Addressing Violence in Post-Acute Care Environments. This webinar is free for AHA members.
Health care providers in various settings, including post-acute care, are taking a
more active role with community partners to combat violence and to address the impact of violence on their patients and staff. In addition to needing care
for physical recovery, patients in post-acute care as a result of violently acquired injuries need appropriate care to instill trust and address
socioeconomic challenges. Other patients in post-acute care may become combative due to being confused as a result of dementia, other cognitive
impairments and/or psychosocial factors. The American Hospital Association (AHA) Section for Long-Term Care and Rehabilitation invites you to join two of
your colleagues on a webinar highlighting their successful approaches to addressing violence in post-acute care environments.
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital is an inner city facility located in an area often fraught with violence. Van Matre HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital is
located in Rockford, a large city northwest of Chicago. Both areas have seen an increase in community violence. Dr. Gittler and Mr. Bowman will share their
successful strategies on:
Providing health care to patients who have violently acquired injuries, including issues of trust, drug and substance abuse, and lack of community-based services and family support
De-escalating potentially violent situations to keep employees and patients safe
Training staff, using post-event analysis and providing care for an injured caregiver
