KHA's Post Acute Care Forum Discusses Bundled Payments
Wednesday, March 29, 2017 9:41 AM
The Kentucky Hospital Association’s Post Acute Care (PAC) Forum met on March 24. The PAC Forum consists of long-term acute care hospitals, physical rehabilitation hospitals, swing bed hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, home health agencies and psychiatric hospitals.
The forum met for a day-long exercise on bundled payments with a goal of determining how to manage a patient through the post acute care continuum to provide the best level of care.
The bundled payment exercise took several months of planning with a key group of PAC providers and KHA staff. The providers selected pneumonia as the primary and secondary diagnosis related group (DRG) as the bundle. The key missing piece to find was the actual costs to the provider. Participants could determine the average cost per episode, but the true cost varies because every patient is unique. So the ultimate question is, "How does the provider become an attractive partner to the bundle manager?" The exercise answered many questions, but left many more on the table for future discussion. A full write-up of the exercise will be created and disseminated to the Forum members.
The bundled payment exercise was an overall success and provided insight into the difficulty of managing patients through the continuum of care to ensure the patient received the appropriate level of care.
The key players at the table were Susan Starling, CEO of Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital and KHA Board Chair; Charles Lovell, CEO of Barbourville ARH Hospital; Alan Coppock, CEO of ContinueCARE Hospital at Baptist Health Corbin; Tonja Williams, CEO of ContinuingCare Hospital at Saint Joseph Hospital; Christa Atkins, CEO of Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital; Len McDade, CEO of ContiueCARE Hospital at Baptist Health Paducah; Frank Schneider, CEO of Gateway Rehabilitation Hospital; Cathy Spalding, Frazier Rehabilitation Hospital; Debbie Nelson, Baptist Health Louisville Rehabilitation Unit; Neil Paslawski, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Lakeview; Sonya Gabbert, Baptist Health Home Care; Susan Stewart, ARH Home Health; Kim Hite, Baptist Health; Dr. David Worthy, CMO Baptist Health Corbin; and Liz Fowler, Bluegrass Care Navigators. The meeting was facilitated by TechSolve.
The forum will meet again on September 14. If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Perkins (email@example.com) at KHA.
